Southern Vancouver Island has a Mediterranean-type climate with warm, dry summers and moist, moderately cool winters. Mean temperatures in July range between 12 and 18 degrees Celsius, while January mean temperatures range between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius. Victoria is located in the rain shadow of the Vancouver Island Mountains, which provides this area with less rain and more sunshine than other parts of the Pacific Northwest, including Vancouver and Seattle.
